ORGANIZATION

Organization will be a key tool in your quest to finish UFO’s this year.  At our first UFO Club meeting in September, Barbara Thieme talked about organizing for success.  The following notes are from her presentation.

  1. Use some kind of organizer for each project.  We have selected 10 project to complete in this year, so try to find 10 containers to hold each of them.  Some suggestions are:

    1. Craft boxes.  Scrap booking craft boxes are available in a 14” x 14” x 3.5” size that are great for storing your UFO projects.  These boxes are big enough to hold the fabric plus your book or pattern and other supplies.  They stack beautifully and you can see your project inside.  They are the most expensive option, however, they will last for many years and can be reused.

    2. Clear Vinyl Bags.  Another great option and somewhat cheaper, vinyl bags come in a variety of sizes, and can hold your entire project also.  They will not stack as well, but could be stored on end along a shelf.  The best option for the vinyl bags are the zippered ones

    3. Cardboard boxes.   Cardboard boxes work well, store easily and can be labeled with your projects inside.

    4. Ziplock Bags.  Giant ziplock bags are an inexpensive option to the vinyl zippered bags.

  2. Gather all of the necessary supplies for each project and store them all together.  You don’t want to lose time and get frustrated when you sit down to work on a project and then find that you don’t have everything you need to complete it.  Take some time ahead (now) and go through each project to see if you have all necessary instructions (pattern or book, etc.), fabric for blocks, borders, back, etc., thread colors are available and if there are any embellishments necessary for completion.  This way when you are ready to sew, your project is ready and waiting.

  3.  Keep your projects in a handy location near your sewing area.

  4. Make a chart on a small whiteboard of your projects, or post the list that you made for the UFO Club on a wall near your sewing area.  You will get a great sense of satisfaction when you can check off a finished project.
Have fun organizing your projects, taking time for this in the beginning will make your journey through the UFO universe a lot more fun!
